If you want more grunt, in every Intel range there is a CPU that can be overclocked at a reasonable price, usually a K model.

It may not be the latest spec but it is as fast as my desktop PC which is a generation older but seems to manage. My view is that if you are going to pay $800 for a diskless unit you might as well build your own Low cost PC based on Mini ITX something like a Gigabyte GA-Z97N-WIFI with a Intel Pentium Dual Core G3420 3.2GHz which is a low power chip but has adequate grunt. I have been following the developments of NAS units in the hope that a low cost model woudl emerge that could transcode, but it has not happened.

This is a great suggestion, I've put this HP in my wishlist! This is exactly what I've been looking for! I want to move away from my desktop for the PMS, and need transcoding support, so I was daunted by the $1k+ pricing for NAS's that can do this. But the MicroServer setup can be done for the same cost as a DS412+ and with the performance of an Ivy Bridge/Sandy Bridge server. I personally love the simplicity of a pre-assembled NAS, and for the moment my Synology NAS is fine because I haven't needed on-the-fly transcoding. It's not for the faint of heart, since some assembly is required and you'll have to find help online if you can't get FreeNAS installed easily. And the Pentium will have plenty enough CPU power to transcode 1080p.

You'll spend up to $100 more on RAM, but then the rest you need is FreeNAS (which is free) and the HDDs (which the ReadyNAS doesn't come with anyway).

According to the FreeNAS website, PMS is now available to install as a package (well, "plugin") directly within FreeNAS: Īn HP MicroServer with an Ivy Bridge-based Pentium G2020T runs less than $500 on NewEgg (as compared to $1200 for a diskless ReadyNAS 516).

I haven't tried this yet, but for something that's both affordable and powerful enough to handle 1080p transcoding, I'd recommend an HP MicroServer running FreeNAS. NAS support/compatability for Plex Media Server

So again, might seem like a silly point to consider, but if I have to choose a NAS, I would rather get one that I know the version of the Plex server software is has, can do the most and has the most an best features to it.Īll in all in looking at the NAS devices, it seems like the Synology units and specifically the DS213 looks like one of the better units (which is why I posted here but also hope I can get some unbiased opinions), but if the Plex server software blows on it as there just is no way to make it not, and is way better on say a Netgear ReadyNAS, I might consider looking at those. Guess I'm kinda saying that as although I obviously haven't used anything other then the windows PMS, I see there are a few other ones for these dif devices, but have to assume by their designs, that for Plex, they are not all the same as there are probably limits and issues per what each NAS device can do. So that kinda brings up the question, of the current offerings Plex has for NAS devices, which one is the best?

And so far its working great and I prefer to leave it this way as its a nice, nothing to do with anything else system.īut for the NAS as it will be for backups, was planning to use it too to backup all the movies from this system as while I could do it all again, it did take me a long time to re-encode them all from the various sources I have so I can use them on myPlex and my Rokus.Īnyway, might seem like a silly reason to make the choice.but as these will also be on there too, while I don't intend to really use it this way, I was thinking in a pinch if I had too, I could for myPlex.

I actually have setup a cheap laptop with a USB drive for using myPlex to my Roku systems. Am just just starting to look into getting a NAS device.īasically my only real need and use for this device will be for is backup storage.
